Choosing the Right Mower
The weather might be pretty cold around St. Louis right now, but that’ll only last for a few months. Then it’s back to the grindstone and the first thing you’ll probably want to do is mow your lawn. In fact, any moment the weather allows it, you’ll probably be itching to touch up those blades. However, it might be time for a new mower. Maybe even your first. If you’re not sure which mower is going to be right for you, then check out our guide from Scott’s Power Equipment. Determining What You Need
While knowing about the different types of mowers is helpful, you’ll need to start with a basic understanding of how mowing needs get figured out. Not all landscapers require the same things from their lawn mowers, so knowing what you need can help you better navigate your options. You’ll probably want to start by looking at how big your property is. If you have a fairly small yard, then you probably won’t need the biggest, most expensive mower you can find. However, those with large fields, professionals, or even those with limited mobility might benefit from these bigger mowers. Think about where you’ll be using your mower, as well as anything that might improve the efficiency of one type of mower over another, in order to really get into which model might be best for you.
Push and Walk-Behind Mowers
Technically, regardless of what you might be envisioning, push mowers are the old-school mowers that have no motor. Sure, we’ve improved the design since the 1950s, but you’d be surprised just how useful these models still are. Those with particularly small bits of yard--like in a big city--can get a perfectly manicured lawn with less hassle and without spending as much money when they get a push mower.
Then again, many yard-workers need something more efficient, which is where the walk-behind mower comes in. These are self-propelled and come with their own motor, so they’re going to be more efficient for bigger lawns, and faster. You’ll still be pushing them, but because they’re self-propelled, you won’t have to work as hard and strain your muscles to do it.
Stand-On Mowers and Riding Mowers
Stand-on mowers are a good bridge between walk-behind and riding mowers. There’s no pushing involved to get them going, as all the movement is controlled using levers at your disposal where you’ll be standing. Generally, the operator stands at the back of the mower as it moves forward. This can be great for those who need something a little more industrial than a walk-behind mower.
When you enter riding mower territory, you’ll be looking at machines that are generally reserved for big properties and professionals. This isn’t exclusive, but riding mowers are specifically designed to provide comfort and efficiency to someone who tends to do a lot of mowing. But as we mentioned earlier, they can also be great for those who simply have a harder time moving around as easily as they used to.
Riding mowers also can offer zero-turn models, which can switch directions on a dime. This ensures you’ll be able to hit every corner of your lawn to give a complete and clean finish, every single time.
